The artist has collected and preserved all used face masks since the pandemic, recorded them with cyanotype photography and sealed them with plastic packaging. What impressed me about this exhibition is that it has caused a debate on whether or not to focus on environmental protection when creating art, and whether or not to focus on recyclability.
In this work the plastic wrap is a form of framing for the artwork. Many different forms of art packaging are not very environmentally friendly, because sometimes art works are not practical and functional, but have spiritual and cultural significance. At the same time, this also leads to many works of art that are not recyclable.
This also led me to think about my own work, because I had an idea of a visual experiment before, which was to collect all the second-hand items acquired and sold by some people in a period of time, split them and stitch them together. But this may cause these items to lose their original function, causing an unnecessary waste after the project is over. So I may rethink whether this artistic expression is appropriate.
